For Sheetal, learning Tanjore painting was an opportunity to step away from the demands of running a construction firm and immerse herself in a creative process. Managing finance, operations, HR, and multiple responsibilities every day, she was looking for an in-person learning experience that would allow her to fully engage with the art form.

Choosing an In-Person Tanjore Painting Experience
Sheetal had wanted to learn from Balaji for some time and deliberately waited for the opportunity to attend an offline class.
"I wanted to take up Balaji last year, but I could not get the dates. This year, I wanted to wait for Balaji. I didn't want an online class. I wanted a one-on-one class."
For her, learning Tanjore painting was not just about the finished artwork. She wanted to experience every stage of the process firsthand.
Learning Through Hands-On Practice
One aspect of the course that stood out to Sheetal was the level of involvement required at every step.
"Once we are here, it's your physical application, application of mind, everything together. The coordination has to be really good."
The process required patience, concentration, and attention to detail, allowing her to fully focus on the work in front of her.
Experiencing the Magic of Gold Foil and Embossing
Like many students learning Tanjore painting for the first time, Sheetal found the gold foil work especially rewarding.
"It was very nice pasting the gold because once you paste the gold on a plain sheet and then when you press it, that effect comes. It gives you a kind of satisfaction."
The embossing stage added another dimension to the experience.
"Once you put the gold on it and then you try to make it look really nice, it's an amazing feeling."
Watching the painting transform through each stage gave her a deeper appreciation for the craft and technique involved in traditional Tanjore art.
Seeing a Different Outcome at Every Stage
One of the things Sheetal enjoyed most was how the artwork evolved throughout the process.
"Any type of art is an experience. But this one, each stage, you see a different outcome."
From preparing the surface to applying gold foil and completing the final details, every stage revealed something new.
This gradual transformation kept the process engaging and made the journey just as rewarding as the finished painting.
Developing a Personal Connection with the Artwork
As the painting progressed, Sheetal found herself becoming emotionally attached to the piece she was creating.
"Once you start seeing how it comes out, you start falling in love with it again and again."
What began as a painting gradually became something much more meaningful.
"You have developed a kind of attachment towards the painting. You don't feel like it's a painting anymore.
For many students, this connection becomes one of the most memorable aspects of the Tanjore painting experience.
Building Patience, Focus, and Calm
Beyond the artistic skills she gained, Sheetal found that the process influenced her personally.
"When I started here, the patience level I had to develop was tremendous."
The concentration and care required for each stage helped her slow down and become more present.
Reflecting on the experience, she noticed meaningful changes in her day-to-day life.
"As an individual I have become more decluttered in my mind and more focused."
"I'm usually a calm person. I've become more calm."
The experience helped her develop greater clarity, focus, and emotional balance—qualities that continue to benefit her beyond the studio.
