In 2026, she joined Tanjore Collective’s in-person Lord Balaji studio course in Bangalore, where she spent two and a half months learning the process step by step, from preparing the base to working with gold foil and bringing the details of the deity to life.

Learning Tanjore Painting Step by Step
Tanjore painting is a process that rewards patience. Every stage - from preparing the wooden base and building the relief work to applying gold foil, placing stones and detailing the figure, contributes to the final artwork.
For someone learning the craft for the first time, knowing what to do is only part of the challenge. Understanding how much material to use, how to approach each stage and how to correct mistakes is equally important.
That is where Divya found the studio learning experience particularly valuable.

The Lord Balaji studio course was designed around this step-by-step approach. With two in-person sessions every week, students had the opportunity to learn directly from Vibha Raj and the instructors, work through each stage of the painting, and receive guidance as their artwork progressed.
From Preparing the Base to Working with Gold Foil
One of the distinctive aspects of learning Tanjore painting is discovering how many layers go into creating the final piece.
Divya experienced this entire process during her Lord Balaji Tanjore painting course, working on a large 15" × 20" or 18" × 24" painting.
The course took students through the different stages of creating a traditional Tanjore painting, including preparing the base, developing the raised work, applying gold foil and adding the intricate details that give the deity its character.
For Divya, being able to understand these stages rather than simply following instructions helped her appreciate the craft on a deeper level.

The Experience of Learning in a Studio
Divya's course was conducted in person at Tanjore Collective's studio in Basavanagudi, Bangalore.
Learning in a physical studio gives students the opportunity to work alongside other learners while having their instructor and assistants close by. Questions can be addressed as they arise, small details can be corrected early, and students can observe techniques being demonstrated in real time.
For Divya, that personal interaction became one of the highlights of the course.

The course also included an Essentials Materials Kit, giving students the materials needed for their painting as they progressed through the different stages.
