By Spurthy GB, Master Teacher at Tanjore Collective, formally trained at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.
To register for a Tanjore painting course, choose your course and format, check the next batch date, then register and pay the fee on the course page, in full or in EMI where it's offered. Your materials kit is shipped to you (5 to 7 days within India, 3 to 4 weeks abroad), and from your first session our teachers guide you all the way to a certificate on completion.
Key takeaways
- Registration takes five steps: choose a course, check the batch, register and pay, receive your kit, and start learning.
- You register directly on each course page, where the fee, sizes and class times are listed.
- EMI over 3 to 36 months is available on many courses through Razorpay.
- Studio seats in Bangalore are limited, so register early for studio batches.
- In 40 years we've taught more than 5,000 students, and most of them were complete beginners.
Registering for something new can bring a small flutter of nerves. What if I pick the wrong course? What if I'm not artistic enough? We hear this often, and it's completely natural. So we've kept registration simple, and once you're in, you're never on your own. Here's exactly what happens, step by step.
How do you register for a Tanjore painting course?
Registration is five simple steps, and most of it happens on the course page itself.
| Step | What you do | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Choose | Pick a deity and a format: live online, studio or DIY | Our classes page |
| 2. Check | Find the next batch date and confirm the class days suit you | Course dates guide and course page |
| 3. Register and pay | Select your painting size and pay the fee, in full or in EMI | The course page |
| 4. Receive | Get your materials kit and your course access | Delivered to you |
| 5. Learn | Join live sessions or follow video lessons, with your teacher's guidance | Zoom, the studio, or our student app |
Step 1: Choose your course and format
Start by choosing the deity you'd like to paint and the way you'd like to learn: live online, in our studio, or through a DIY video course.
- Live online classes meet twice a week over Zoom with a master artist. Every session is recorded and shared with you.
- Studio classes are held in person at our studio in Basavangudi, Bangalore. It's the traditional, hands-on way to learn.
- DIY video courses are self-paced and pre-recorded, so you learn on your own schedule.
For a first painting, a single central deity on a 6.5-week course is a lovely place to begin. Lord Ganesha, Goddess Gajalakshmi and Goddess Saraswati are all gentle first choices. Larger subjects like Lord Balaji and Lakshmi Narasimha are wonderful to grow into later. If you're unsure, our guide to which format fits you compares the three, and the deities we teach introduces each one.
Step 2: Check the calendar and seats
Next, find the batch that fits your calendar. Live and studio courses start on set dates, while DIY courses start the day you register.
Our next live online batches begin in January 2027: Lord Balaji on 11 January, Lord Ganesha on 12 January and Lord Hanuman on 13 January. More batches open in April, July and October. You'll find every one, with class days, duration and sizes, in our Tanjore painting course dates guide.
Before you register, look at the class days on the course page and make sure you can keep them for the whole course. Most courses run 6.5 weeks, and larger subjects run 10 to 11 weeks. If you're choosing a studio batch, register early, because studio seats are limited.
Step 3: Register and pay the fee
You register and pay directly on the course page. Choose your painting size where there's a choice, then pay the course fee in full or in EMI.
Each course has its own fee, shown on its page, and it depends on the size of the painting, the length of the course and the deity. On many courses you can choose EMI at checkout and spread the fee over 3 to 36 months through Razorpay, with major banks including HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, Kotak and American Express.
For more detail, see our guide to Tanjore painting class fees, and our explainer on course fees, EMI and registration, which also covers our refund policy. In short: because your seat is reserved for you the moment you book, we follow a strict no-refund policy, so take a moment to be sure of your batch before you pay.
Watch: a beginner-friendly start
If you're wondering what you're signing up for, here's how a painting begins in our classes, from a sketched board to the first stones and gold.
Step 4: Receive your materials and access
Once you've registered, your materials kit is shipped to you and you receive what you need to join your course.
Our Essentials Material Kit (₹4,000) has everything for your painting: a pre-sketched canvas, 24 karat gold sheets, Arabic gum, chalk powder, kundan stones, original Swarovski crystals and four premium brushes. It's shipped via FedEx. Each course page explains how the kit works for that course, so you'll know what to order when you register.
| Where you are | Allow for delivery |
|---|---|
| Within India | 5 to 7 days |
| Outside India | 3 to 4 weeks |
So order your kit as soon as you've registered, and you'll have it on your table before your first class. If you're joining from abroad, our guide to online classes for NRIs covers shipping and time zones in more detail.
You'll also receive your course access. For live classes, that means the details to join your sessions. For DIY, it's your video lessons in our student app, which you can watch on your phone or laptop.
Step 5: Start learning, with support all the way
From your first session, you learn step by step with a teacher guiding you, and you receive a certificate when you complete your course.
In live classes, you paint alongside your batch while your teacher demonstrates and corrects as you go. Missed a session? It's recorded, and recordings stay available for one month after the course ends. In DIY courses, you follow the video lessons at your own pace and send photos of your painting to your teacher on WhatsApp, so you still get feedback on your own work.
Either way, you'll move through every stage in order: preparing the canvas, transferring the sketch, setting the kundan stones, building the gesso relief, laying 24 karat gold, painting, and finally the face. You don't need to know how to draw. The canvas comes pre-sketched.
So many of our students begin too scared to even touch a brush, and slowly learn to trust themselves through every painting. That's the journey we're here for. I can't wait for you to fall in love with this art form.
