How Akshaya Learned Tanjore Painting Online Despite Her Initial Doubts

Initially sceptical about learning such a detailed art form online, Akshaya took her first step into Tanjore painting through a live online course at Tanjore Collective.
Akshaya N’s introduction to Tanjore painting began with a random post on Instagram.
What started as a moment of curiosity soon became her first experience of learning the art form through Tanjore Collective’s Gajalakshmi online course.
“I came across Tanjore Collective as a random post in Instagram and there was a sudden spark to be a part of the class.”
It was her first attempt at Tanjore painting, and she wasn't entirely sure what to expect.
Taking the First Step
Like many beginners, Akshaya wondered whether an art form as detailed as Tanjore painting could really be learnt online.
“Initially I was quite sceptical as to how the online classes would be, as this art form is quite detailed and needs a lot of focus and attention.”
She was also unsure of how her own painting would turn out.
“This was my first attempt, and I was a little under confident as well, as to how it would turn out to be.”
But as the weeks went by, that uncertainty began to fade.
The live sessions, recorded classes and regular guidance from Vibha and the team helped her understand the process one step at a time.
And somewhere along the way, painting became more than something she was learning.
“The moment I sat down to work on it, I would completely lose track of time. Every session became a space where nothing else mattered except the painting in front of me.”
Akshaya beautifully captured her journey from the first step to the finished painting.
Learning Every Stage of the Process
A Tanjore painting is built slowly, and Akshaya experienced every stage herself — from preparing the gesso to working with gold foil, placing gemstones and finally adding colour.
“From learning the correct proportions of gum and chalk powder to prepare the perfect gesso, understanding the right thickness to apply it, carefully cutting and pasting the delicate gold foils, placing each gemstone, and finally bringing every detail to life with paint—every step was a learning experience.”
Her collage captures this progression beautifully — from the first stages of drawing and gesso work to the gold foil, gemstones and the finished Gajalakshmi.
The gold foil work, in particular, tested her patience.
“The gold foil work especially tested my patience, but seeing the final result made every minute worthwhile.”
The Encouragement to Keep Going
For Akshaya, the guidance she received throughout the course made a real difference.
Vibha and the team patiently explained techniques, reviewed the students’ work, answered questions and encouraged them through the more difficult stages.
“Every week, Vibha and her team patiently explained each technique, answered our endless questions, reviewed our work, and motivated us to keep improving.”
That support helped her keep going even when she wasn't sure of herself.
“Their encouragement gave me the confidence to continue even when a step felt difficult.”
And gradually, the painting began to take shape.
Completing Her First Tanjore Painting
After weeks of learning and working through each stage, Akshaya completed her Gajalakshmi painting.
But even after the painting was complete, there was one more part of the journey she enjoyed — choosing the frame.
“Even after the painting was complete, the excitement wasn’t over. Choosing the perfect frame to enhance Goddess Lakshmi was another memorable part of the journey.”
Today, the painting has become part of her home and her family's celebrations.
“Today, this painting has become part of our home and every festival we celebrate.”
And every time she looks at it, she is reminded of everything that went into creating it.
“Every time I do, it reminds me of the countless hours, patience, and love that went into creating it.”
Perhaps the most meaningful part is knowing that she completed something she once wasn't sure she could do.
“It fills me with pride knowing that I completed something I once thought was beyond my abilities.”
More Than a Painting
Akshaya’s journey began with a simple Instagram post. Her first step was taken with curiosity, and along the way, she discovered the patience and confidence that came with learning something new.
As she puts it:
“There are some journeys that teach you much more than a skill—they teach you patience, dedication, and the joy of creating something with your own hands.”
Her Gajalakshmi painting is now part of her home, but it also carries the memory of the hours she spent creating it — one stage, one detail and one patient step at a time.
“I’ll always cherish this experience.”
Today, Akshaya’s Gajalakshmi painting has a special place in her home and during her family’s festivals.
What began with a random Instagram post became weeks of learning, patience and practice and a painting she is proud to have created herself.
