“I Had Never Been Taught These Techniques Before”: Sowmya’s Tanjore Painting Journey

For Sowmya, learning Tanjore painting with Tanjore Collective was an opportunity to discover techniques she had never learnt before. She joined the online Goddess Gajalakshmi Tanjore painting course in April 2026, and as she progressed through the course, she found herself learning much more than how to complete a painting.
What stood out to her was the way the techniques were taught—with patience, attention to detail, and an emphasis on the finer aspects of the artwork.
“I have never learnt Tanjore Painting in this way before”
Sowmya came into the course with an interest in learning Tanjore painting, but the experience turned out to be different from what she had expected.
Reflecting on the course, she says:
“I have never learnt Tanjore Painting in this way before, and no one has taught me these techniques so clearly and beautifully.”
For her, the difference was in the way each technique was explained. Rather than simply following instructions to complete her Gajalakshmi painting, she was able to understand the techniques behind the process.
She joined the 12" x 15" Gajalakshmi online course, which began on April 14, 2026. Over 6.5 weeks, she attended two live classes each week, learning through Zoom with Vibha teaching and Yashaswini supporting as an assistant teacher.
The live format allowed Sowmya to learn the painting step by step while getting guidance throughout the process.
Discovering Techniques She Had Never Been Taught Before
As Sowmya worked through her Gajalakshmi painting, one of the biggest takeaways for her was discovering techniques that were completely new to her.
She says:
“I discovered so many new techniques that I had never been taught before.”
This became an important part of her learning experience. The course did not just focus on helping her get from the first step of the painting to the last. It gave her an opportunity to understand the techniques more closely and see how they contribute to the final artwork.
For Sowmya, these were the kinds of details that made the course different from simply learning to reproduce a painting.
Learning the Details That Make a Tanjore Painting Look Beautiful
Sowmya particularly appreciated the attention given to the smaller details of the painting.
She explains:
“They don’t just teach us how to complete a painting—they explain the techniques, finer details, finishing, and the little things that make the artwork look beautiful and professional.”
This was one of the most valuable parts of her experience.
While working on Gajalakshmi, Sowmya was learning not only what to do, but also how the finer details and finishing contribute to the overall appearance of a Tanjore painting.
For her, understanding these elements made the learning process more enriching and helped her look at the artwork differently.
Learning With Patience and Attention to Detail
Sowmya also remembers the experience of being taught by Vibha, Yashaswini, and Spoorti as an important part of her journey.
She says:

For Sowmya, this patient approach made it easier to learn techniques carefully rather than feeling rushed through the process.
The live online classes gave her the opportunity to learn each stage of the Gajalakshmi painting while receiving guidance from the teaching team. Over the course of the 6.5 weeks, this helped her build a better understanding of the art and the techniques involved.
“It has given me so much more confidence in my painting”
Learning techniques that were new to her also changed how Sowmya felt about her own painting.
She says:
“I discovered so many new techniques that I had never been taught before, and it has given me so much more confidence in my painting.”
For Sowmya, this confidence was one of the most meaningful outcomes of the course.
Completing the Gajalakshmi painting gave her a finished artwork, but learning new techniques gave her something she could take beyond this particular painting. She came away with a better understanding of how different techniques, details, and finishing contribute to the final result.
A Gajalakshmi Painting and a New Understanding of the Art
By the end of her online Gajalakshmi course, Sowmya had completed her 12" x 15" Tanjore painting and, more importantly, had discovered a new way of approaching the art.
Her experience was shaped by the techniques she learnt, the attention given to finer details, and the patience of the teaching team.
