One Tanjore Painting Led to Another: Honna Gowri’s Story

For Honna Gowri, Tanjore painting became more than a one-time experience. After learning to create a Lalitha Devi Tanjore painting through a live online class in 2023, she returned to Tanjore Collective for her second project, a DIY Ganesha painting.
Her journey from a guided live class to a self-paced DIY project shows how learning Tanjore painting can evolve with each artwork. What began with a virtual classroom eventually gave her the confidence to take on another painting at her own pace, while still having guidance when she needed it.
Starting with Lalitha Devi
Gowri's first experience with Tanjore Collective was the Lalitha Devi live online course, which began in September 2023.
The seven-week course was conducted through live Zoom sessions with Vibha, giving Gowri the opportunity to learn each stage of the painting with direct instruction. Recordings were also shared after the classes, allowing her to revisit the lessons as she worked on her 12" x 15" painting.
Looking back at her experience with the studio, Gowri describes it simply:
“My experience with Tanjore Collectives has been truly wonderful!”
That first painting gave her an introduction to the process, the detailing involved in Tanjore art, and the experience of learning with the guidance of an instructor.
But Gowri wasn’t finished with just one painting.
Returning for Her Second Tanjore Painting
For her next project, Gowri chose a DIY Ganesha Tanjore painting.
Unlike her Lalitha Devi project, this time she could work through the lessons at her own pace. The DIY course was designed around step-by-step video instruction, with access to the course for 90 days and guidance available through WhatsApp.
For someone already familiar with the fundamentals of Tanjore painting, this gave Gowri a different kind of learning experience — one where she could pause, revisit a step and continue when she was ready.
And she found the transition surprisingly enjoyable.
“I recently completed my second Tanjore art project, which was a DYI Ganesha painting, after previously creating Maa Lalitha Devi in their virtual class.”
Her second painting wasn’t simply another artwork. It was also a continuation of what she had learnt the first time around.
Learning at Her Own Pace Without Feeling Alone
One of the challenges of learning an intricate art form independently is knowing what to do when you get stuck.
For Gowri, the DIY format gave her flexibility without making the process feel isolated.
She particularly appreciated the quality of the instructional videos, which helped her understand the process step by step.
“The instructional videos are exceptionally well made, making the entire DIY process easy and enjoyable to follow.”
The materials also played an important role in her experience. Her DIY Ganesha project came with a high-quality materials kit, carefully packed and shipped to her, so she could begin working with the materials needed for the painting.
Gowri specifically noticed this attention to detail:
“The quality of the materials and the careful way they are packaged and shipped is truly commendable.”
For a detailed art form like Tanjore painting, having the right materials and knowing how to use them can make the process feel much more manageable.
Having Guidance When She Needed It
Even though Gowri was working through the Ganesha painting independently, she wasn’t completely on her own.
Vibha continued to be a source of guidance throughout the DIY process. Whenever Gowri had a question, she could reach out on WhatsApp and when something needed correcting, she could get help before moving ahead.
“She patiently answers queries on WhatsApp and even guides me with corrections whenever needed.”
That combination of independence and support became an important part of Gowri's DIY experience. She could decide when to work on her painting, while still knowing that help was available when she needed another pair of experienced eyes.
From One Painting to the Next
Gowri's experience is especially interesting because her two paintings came through two different learning formats.
Her Lalitha Devi painting was created through a live online course, where she learnt alongside an instructor and had the structure of scheduled classes. Her Ganesha painting, on the other hand, was created through a DIY course, giving her the freedom to work around her own schedule.
Moving from one format to the other allowed her to experience Tanjore painting in two different ways, first with live instruction and then with the flexibility of self-paced learning.
And by the time she completed her Ganesha, she was already thinking about what she could create next.

For Gowri, the journey didn’t end with completing her second Tanjore painting. Her Lalitha Devi and Ganesha artworks became two steps in an ongoing exploration of Tanjore painting, from learning the craft in a virtual classroom to confidently taking on a DIY project of her own.
