Choosing Traditional Tanjore Painting with Authenticity
For Nalini, learning Tanjore painting was deeply connected to devotion, tradition, and the desire to experience authentic Indian art. Inspired by her love for Lord Balaji, she joined the studio course at Tanjore Collective with no prior experience in painting and gradually discovered confidence through constant practice and guided learning.
Choosing Traditional Tanjore Painting with Authenticity
Nalini chose Tanjore Collective because of its strong focus on traditional techniques and authenticity in Tanjore painting.
“Lord Balaji is my favourite deity. I chose this particular painting class because I feel they concentrate more on traditional techniques, they focus more on authenticity.”
For her, the experience was not just about completing a painting, but also about understanding the traditional process behind the art form.
“It’s been grateful for me to be a part of the Tanjore Collective.”
Learning Tanjore Painting from Scratch
Before joining the course, Nalini had no background in painting or art. The learning process started from the very basics, helping her slowly build confidence with regular practice.
“My experience with painting portion, I really enjoyed the entire process because I had no experience in any paint art or anything.”
She began by practising simple strokes, flower shapes, and detailing exercises that are essential in traditional Tanjore painting.
“So right from the scratch, I had to practice with starting from strokes, the shapes of flowers. I could learn different varieties of flowers.”
With every class and every stage of practice, her confidence gradually improved.
“Practicing gave me more and more confidence and I started learning.”
Understanding the Importance of Embossing
One of Nalini’s favourite parts of the course was learning the embossing process — a defining element in Tanjore painting that creates depth and richness before the gold work begins.
“The enjoying part I would say is the embossing where we get to understand the level of height where that makes the gold process easy.”
She found the embossing stage especially interesting because of how much it contributed to the final appearance of the artwork.
“So I feel embossing has more importance so that takes the painting to the next level.”
Overcoming Self-Doubt During Gold Work
Like many beginners learning Tanjore painting for the first time, Nalini initially felt nervous when she was introduced to the gold work stage.
“Initially when I was informed that the gold portion is going to start, I was feeling a little nervous thinking it’s way too much difficult.”
She also experienced self-doubt about whether she would be able to complete the painting successfully.
“I was having a lot of self-doubt that I could complete.”
However, the patient guidance and support from the teachers helped her become comfortable with the process step by step.
“But the proper guidance and the technique from the teachers… they are very much comfortable in teaching each time we ask them.”
Completing Her First Traditional Tanjore Painting
By the end of the course, Nalini successfully completed her traditional Tanjore painting and felt deeply satisfied with her progress.
“In the end I could complete and I’m really happy and satisfied.”
