Our 2027 Tanjore painting course calendar: every live online batch with dates, deities, class days, duration and sizes, plus studio batches and DIY courses you can start anytime.

By Yashaswini Jaishankar, Head Teacher at Tanjore Collective. Yashaswini began as one of our students and now leads our classes.
Our next Tanjore painting batches start in January 2027: Lord Balaji on 11 January, Lord Ganesha on 12 January and Lord Hanuman on 13 January, all live online. After that, new online batches open every April, July and October through 2027. If you'd rather not wait for a start date, our DIY video courses (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Lalitha Devi) begin whenever you're ready.
Key takeaways
- Ten live online batches are planned for 2027, starting with Balaji, Ganesha and Hanuman in January.
- Every live batch meets twice a week. Most deities take 6.5 weeks; larger subjects like Balaji and Lakshmi Narasimha take 10 to 11 weeks.
- DIY video courses start anytime, with 75 to 90 days of course access depending on the deity.
- Studio seats in Bangalore are limited, so it helps to enrol early.
- In 40 years we've taught more than 5,000 students, most of them complete beginners.
Maybe you've been meaning to learn for a while. You've saved a few paintings, wondered if you could ever make one yourself, and then life got busy. That's completely normal. Often, what finally helps is simply seeing a date. A Monday in January. A deity you love. A batch of people who'll start alongside you.
So here's every batch we've planned, in one place. Pick the one that feels right, and we'll take care of the rest. If you're still deciding between formats, our guide to which format fits you is a good place to start.
How are our Tanjore painting batches scheduled?
Our live batches start at set dates through the year, meet twice a week, and run for 6.5 to 11 weeks depending on how detailed the deity is.
Simpler compositions, usually a single central deity, take about 6.5 weeks. Larger and more detailed subjects take longer: Lord Balaji runs about 11 weeks, and Lakshmi Narasimha is taught as an advanced 10-week course. The length isn't about speed. It's about giving you enough time to do each stage well, from preparing the canvas and setting the stones to the gold, the colours and, finally, the face.
Sessions are held in the evening, on two fixed days each week, and every live session is recorded. So if you miss one, you can catch up, and you'll have the recordings for up to one month after the course ends. We teach in batches, not one-on-one, for good reasons; you can read why in why we teach in batches.

A small tip if you're new: the 6.5-week batches, with a single central deity, are a lovely first painting. Ganesha in January or Gajalakshmi in April are both gentle places to begin. Balaji and Lakshmi Narasimha are wonderful to grow into once you've finished a painting or two. Not sure which deity is calling you? Our guide to the deities we teach walks you through each one.
Learning from outside India?
Many of our online students join from the USA, the UK, Canada and Germany. Because every live session is recorded, you can still keep up if a class falls at an awkward hour where you live. Sumedha's story shows how that works in practice: read how she learned across time zones.

Which 2026 batches are running now?
All of our 2026 batches have now started, so they're closed to new students. We've kept them here for reference, because they show the pattern the year usually follows.
| Start date | Deity | Format | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 Apr 2026 | Radha and Krishna in a boat | Online | 6.5 weeks |
| 14 Apr 2026 | Goddess Gajalakshmi | Online and studio | 6.5 weeks |
| 1 Jul 2026 | Lord Balaji | Online | 10 weeks |
| 4 Jul 2026 | Goddess Saraswati | Studio | 6.5 weeks |
| 6 Jul 2026 | Shiva Parivar (advanced) | Online | 9.5 weeks |
| 7 Jul 2026 | Goddess Saraswati | Online | 6.5 weeks |
| 5 Oct 2026 | Goddess Lalitha Devi | Online | 6.5 weeks |
| 6 Oct 2026 | Goddess Padmavathi | Online | 9 weeks |
If you'd hoped to join one of these, don't worry. Gajalakshmi, Saraswati, Balaji and Lalitha Devi all return in 2027, in the table above.
When are the studio batches in Bangalore?
Our studio batches are held in person at our studio in Basavangudi, Bangalore, with limited seats in each batch.
In 2026 we ran two studio batches: Goddess Gajalakshmi from 14 April (Tuesdays and Thursdays, mornings) and Goddess Saraswati from 4 July (weekends, mornings). Both have now started. Our next studio dates will be added to our classes page as soon as they're set, so keep an eye there.
Learning in the studio is the traditional way, side by side at the board, with your teacher right beside you. Because the room only holds so many people, studio seats tend to fill first.
Can you start a DIY Tanjore painting course anytime?
Yes. Our DIY video courses are self-paced, so there's no batch date at all. You can begin the day you enrol.
| DIY course | Size (inches) | Course access |
|---|---|---|
| Goddess Lakshmi | 10 x 12 or 12 x 15 | 75 days |
| Goddess Saraswati | 10 x 12 or 12 x 15 | 90 days |
| Lord Ganesha | 12 x 12 or 15 x 15 | 90 days |
| Goddess Lalitha Devi | 10 x 12 or 12 x 15 | 90 days |
You watch the lessons on your phone or laptop, in order, at your own pace, and send photos of your painting to your teacher on WhatsApp for guidance. It's a good fit if your weeks are unpredictable, or if live class times don't suit where you live. If you're weighing the two, our comparison of live online and DIY courses may help.
How do you reserve a seat?
Choose your batch, enrol on its course page, and add the materials kit if you need one. That's it.
- Pick your batch. Use the tables above to choose a deity, a date and a format that fit your life.
- Open the course page and enrol. Each page shows the latest start date, class days and times, sizes and fees. For a full picture of what each format costs, see our guide to Tanjore painting class fees.
- Get your kit. Our Essentials Material Kit (₹4,000) has everything you need: a pre-sketched canvas, 24 karat gold sheets, Arabic gum, chalk powder, kundan stones, Swarovski crystals and four premium brushes. We ship it to you, so it's ready for your first class.
- Join your first class. Then take it one session at a time. You don't need to know how to draw. The canvas comes pre-sketched, and we teach every step.
I'll be honest: almost everyone feels a little nervous before their first class. Many of our students arrive too scared to even touch a brush. Then, slowly, one stage at a time, they start trusting their own hands. I can't wait for you to fall in love with this art form.
Frequently asked questions
When is the next Tanjore painting batch?
Our next batches are live online, starting with Lord Balaji on 11 January 2027, Lord Ganesha on 12 January and Lord Hanuman on 13 January. More batches open in April, July and October 2027.

Yes. DIY video courses have no batch date, so you can start the day you enrol. You get 75 to 90 days of course access, depending on the deity, with WhatsApp guidance from your teacher.
How far ahead should I enrol?
As early as you comfortably can, especially for studio batches, where seats are limited. Enrolling early also leaves time for your materials kit to reach you before your first class.
